An Interrupted Finalisation Leaves the Recording Whole and Its Index Unwritten
Her enquiry describes an interruption at the worst possible moment and includes, unusually, a control. A camcorder disc where "when finalising, the battery went dead causing it to stop", producing a specific disc error — and the detail that "it is a two-sided disc and the other side finalised okay." The working side is evidence: the same camera, the same disc, the same session, differing only in whether the last step completed.

The decode: what finalisation writes, and why the other side settles so much
What recording to this kind of disc involves: two separate things. The video is written to the recording layer as it is captured, and a table describing where each recording begins is written afterwards.
Why the second step exists at all: players need an index. A disc's lead-in area holds the table a player reads first, and without it the player has no map of the surface.
What an interruption at that moment leaves: everything except the map. The video was written during recording and is complete; only the description of it is missing.
Why a player reports an error rather than showing something: it stops at the lead-in. Finding no usable table, it concludes the disc is unreadable and goes no further.
Why the error is therefore misleading: it describes the first thing checked. The player never reached the recording, so its verdict concerns the index alone.
Now the other side, which is genuinely valuable evidence: it eliminates almost everything. The same camera wrote it, the same disc carries it, and it finalised normally — so neither the camera nor the media was at fault.
What that leaves as the sole difference: the power. One side completed its final step and one did not, which is exactly what she reports.
Why un-finalising did not help: it addresses the opposite problem. That operation removes a table that was written, and hers was never written.
Why the intervening years cost nothing: the disc was stored. An unplayed disc kept away from heat and light does not degrade meaningfully over that period.
What must not happen now: no further finalisation attempts and no erasure. A camera offered a disc it cannot read may propose formatting it, and the recordings are the only thing on it.
