Most hard drives give several weeks of advance warning before they completely fail: extended pauses, delayed copy operations, random freeze-ups that resolve without intervention. This looks like an old computer but is generally a failing disk, and while it is still in this phase almost everything can be recovered, often by yourself (and for no cost).
Mechanical failure occurs over time; these are the indicators, in the typical sequence.
Files take longer to open. A brief delay appears during saves. Boot times increase. The disk is repeatedly retrying bad sectors until it finally succeeds.
New whining sounds, intermittent ticking, unusual sounds upon startup. Still not the “click of death”, but the same mechanical parts are starting to struggle.
Photographs with corrupt blocks of data, documents that cannot be opened, folders that appear to be empty. The file system remains intact and the sectors below it do not.
At this point, either the drive is not recognised at all, or it is recognised but can't be read. At this stage, the early warning signs have been occurring for some time and the recoverable window of opportunity has narrowed.
Review SMART data. In Windows, CrystalDiskInfo can read SMART data without a permanent installation. On a Mac, DriveDx does the same. The three things to review are reallocated sector count, pending sectors and uncorrectable errors. Any of these values increasing shows failure of the drive regardless of what else it says.
Next determine if the drive can still mount. If so, transfer all of your critical files to safe media as soon as possible: right now, before continuing. A failing drive that still reads is a gift, and it won't last.
Stop using this drive. Now. Not when you finish working. With each passing hour that an unstable drive continues to work, it uses up readable sectors you may need back for recovery purposes.
Do not run chkdsk or a repair utility. They write to the disk they are checking, and on a drive with failing sectors the write will frequently land on a sector where it cannot be completed. This is the #1 cause of converting a recoverable disk into a partially recoverable one.

Nobody can know. It could be months, or it could be tomorrow. That is the truth. The certainty is, however, that if a hard disk reports reallocations then it will never get better. Make copies of your files immediately and use a different drive.
A persistently slow computer with no other reason for the slowness is often caused by a drive trying to read from bad sectors. Each time it tries, it does eventually succeed in reading the sector. That's why, instead of failing, it causes delays. The slowness is an early warning, not a performance problem.
A classic form of sector-level failure. The file system still has knowledge of what is in each location, and some of those locations are failing to read. This type of failure can be recovered from, and it is much easier to recover from if you stop using the drive now.
If it continues to mount and you have a spare disk, then using a “sector-level” clone (using an error skip as opposed to error retry) with a program is a reasonable approach. In no case should you be using a tool which continues to hammer on bad sectors. This will accelerate the failure.
Urgent. The addition of a mechanical noise indicates the movement of parts within the drive which should not be happening. Unplug the unit immediately and do not complete what you were trying to accomplish.
