What Damages a Cold Drive Is Being Warmed Up and Switched On Too Quickly

His enquiry names a cause that is half right and worth correcting carefully. A 1TB drive that "is just saying it is corrupt and wants to reconfigure", which he thinks "may have been left overnight in the boot of a car during a cold night." Cold itself rarely harms a drive — what harms it is what happens next, when a cold drive is brought indoors and connected before it has had time to reach room temperature.

The decode: why cold is tolerated, and what actually does the damage

What drives are specified to withstand when not running: a wide range. Storage temperature limits extend well below freezing, because devices are shipped and stored in unheated conditions as a matter of course.

Why a cold night in a vehicle is therefore not itself the fault: it falls within that range. An unpowered drive at low temperature is not being harmed by the temperature.

What happens when it comes indoors: moisture forms on it. A cold object in warm air collects condensation from that air, on its surfaces and inside its housing.
