An Unfinalised Disc Holds Its Video and Not the Index That Tells a Player Where It Is

The decode: what finalising does, and why it is now impossible to do
What recording to a disc actually writes: the content, in a recorded area. Video is laid down as it is transferred and occupies the disc from the inner edge outward, exactly as it would on a finalised disc.
What finalising adds afterwards: the index. A closing operation writes a table at the disc's inner edge describing where each recording begins and ends, and marks the disc closed.
Why players depend on that table absolutely: it is the first thing they read. A player consults the lead-in area, finds no table, and concludes there is nothing to play — which is why domestic machines report the discs as blank.
Why that is a reporting failure rather than a finding: the player never looked further. Content sitting beyond the lead-in is not examined at all, because nothing directed the player to it.
Why the recorder failing is what makes this permanent: finalisation is normally performed by the machine that recorded. The recorder knows what it wrote and can complete the table; another machine generally cannot.
Why a replacement recorder rarely helps: manufacturers implement recording differently. A different machine presented with an unfinalised disc from another recorder frequently offers to erase it rather than close it, which is the destructive outcome.
How the content is reached instead: the disc is read at sector level rather than through playback. Recorded areas are located directly and the video streams extracted without reference to any table of contents.
Why that works where players fail: the data is ordinary recorded content. Its position on the disc is discoverable from the physical track structure, whether or not anything describes it.
What is rebuilt afterwards: timing and chapter boundaries. Stream structure carries enough information to reassemble continuous playable video, though original titles and menus will not return.
What must not happen meanwhile: no attempts to finalise or close the discs in another machine, and no cleaning with solvents. Both risk the one copy of material that exists.
