A Volume Reported as Raw and a File Format Called Raw Have Nothing to Do With Each Other

The decode: separating the two words, and what a scan finding nothing really means
What the first sense describes: a volume state. A host reporting a card as unrecognised means it looked for a structure identifying the filesystem and did not find one it could interpret.
Why that says almost nothing about the content: the descriptor is tiny. A few hundred bytes at a known position determine whether a volume is recognised, and the photographs sit elsewhere entirely.
What the second sense describes: a file format. Manufacturer image formats store sensor output with minimal processing, and each maker uses its own layout under its own extension.
Why the two are entirely unrelated: one is about the card and one is about the files on it. The coincidence of the word is the only connection between them.
Now why his scans returned nothing, which is the useful part: carving recognises shapes. Where a filesystem cannot be read, tools search for the distinctive opening bytes of known file types, and they only find what they have signatures for.
Why manufacturer formats are frequently missing from those signature sets: they are proprietary and numerous. Each maker's format differs, several have changed across camera generations, and free tools commonly cover ordinary photographs and not these.
What follows for his result: nothing found may mean nothing recognised. A scan returning empty is not evidence that the card is empty, only that the tool saw nothing it knew.
