A Drive Is at More Risk From How It Is Packed Than From How Far It Goes

His enquiry raises a practical worry that rarely gets answered properly. An external drive that no longer appears on the computer although the indicator still flashes and the sounds are unchanged, where he is "wary of sending it off in the post, so I'm looking for a local company." The instinct is sound and the reasoning behind it is usually wrong: distance is not the risk, and a well-packed drive is safer in transit than a badly packed one carried by hand.

The decode: what actually damages a drive in transit, and what his symptoms suggest

What a drive in transit is actually exposed to: shock, not mileage. The risk is a single impact, and a parcel travelling two hundred miles receives no more impacts than one travelling two.

Why packing is the variable that matters: it determines whether an impact reaches the drive. A drive suspended in cushioning inside a rigid box experiences a fraction of what a drive in a padded envelope does.

Why a padded envelope is the common mistake: it feels protective and is not. Bubble lining resists abrasion rather than shock, and a drive inside one is effectively unprotected against being dropped.

What good packing looks like in practice: two layers and no movement. The drive wrapped and cushioned so it cannot shift, inside a rigid outer box with space around it on every side.

Why carrying it by hand is not automatically safer: the same physics apply. A drive loose in a bag is exposed to every knock the bag receives, and journeys by hand involve more handling rather than less.

Why the original enclosure or a case is worth keeping: it is designed for the drive. A drive returned to its own housing travels better than a bare one.
