An Observation You Did Not Make Arrives Bundled With a Conclusion, and They Are Not the Same Thing

The two thousand two hundredth file in this archive is about a report from someone else. A dropped drive taken to a repair shop, who "told me the platter is scratched and the headstack is stuck to the platters, and that there is no way to recover the data" — with six years of photographs on it, and her own careful question: "is there any way at all that even some of the data can be recovered?" Her question has already done the work, because it separates what the verdict joined together.

The decode: five things this case establishes, at a milestone

The first — that verdict contains three separate claims, and they are not equally reliable. Two are observations: the head assembly is adhered to the platters, and a platter is scratched. One is a conclusion: there is no way to recover the data. The conclusion is not a fourth thing that was seen — it is an inference drawn from the other two, and it arrives sounding exactly as authoritative as they do. Separating what was observed from what was concluded is the entire skill in reading a report like this, and it has to be done deliberately, because the report does not do it for you.

The second — the two observations have opposite implications, and bundling them hides that. Heads adhered to a platter is among the most ordinary findings after a drop. It is routine, it is expected, and it is recovered from constantly: the assembly is freed under filtered air and replaced from a matched donor, and the drive reads afterwards. The third — even the serious observation does not support the conclusion. A scratch is a mark at a radius. The fifth, and the one that explains how a verdict like this gets said at all. A shop assessing a drive is reporting the limit of what they can do. There is no way to recover this is very often a compressed way of saying we cannot recover this, and the compression happens without anyone intending to mislead. A general repair business does not hold a filtered-air bench, matched donor stock or imaging equipment with per-sector timeouts, and correctly concludes the job is beyond it. What travels to the customer is the shorter sentence, and the shorter sentence is about a different subject.

The principle, stated plainly for the two thousand two hundredth file: when a finding reaches you through someone else, take it apart before you act on it. Ask what was actually seen, what was inferred from it, and who the conclusion is really about — and notice that the observation can be entirely sound while the conclusion drawn from it is wrong. Her instinct to ask about some of the data rather than all of it is the correct move, and it is available to anyone who reads a verdict as a set of claims rather than a single one.
