Restoring the Electronics Restores Access to the Volume, Not the Volume Itself
This enquiry describes a repair that worked and a problem that remains. A portable drive whose board was damaged by an incorrect power adapter, since "repaired" by a local shop who "cannot see the library" although they advise "the photos are still on the hard drive" — with the content needed in a form a current machine can open. The decode: the three separate things involved, and why only one was fixed
What the repair actually addressed: the path to the data. Restoring the board makes the drive able to answer a host, which is a necessary step and not a sufficient one.
What sits behind that and is untouched by it: the volume. The filesystem describing where everything is may have been damaged by the same event, and no amount of board repair addresses that.
Why an over-voltage event can affect both: the drive was live. A drive interrupted mid-operation by an electrical fault can be left with structures written incompletely.
Why the repairing party's two statements are consistent: they saw different things. Content present on the drive and a library not visible describe the data and its description respectively.
Now the third element, which is specific to her situation: the library format. A photo library is a container holding images alongside a database describing them, and the application must understand that container to present it.
Why that matters for a library of that age: formats change. A library created by an older version of an application may not open in a current one, even when the drive and the volume are perfect.
Why that could be the whole problem rather than a complication: it produces the same symptom. A library that cannot be opened by the software looks identical to a library that is not there.
How that is resolved: by going past the application. The images inside a library container are ordinary files and can be extracted directly, without the application opening anything.
