A Display Fault Has No Bearing on a Drive That Can Simply Be Removed

Her enquiry describes several problems and reaches a pessimistic conclusion from their number. A laptop from 2012 that the manufacturer classes as beyond support, where the keyboard illuminates but "the screen is black upon start-up" and an external display shows nothing either — "so there appear to be multiple problems." There may well be, and none of them is the problem that governs whether her files come back.

The decode: which fault matters, and why the machine's age helps

What the illuminated keyboard establishes: the machine has power and begins starting. Backlighting is driven early in the start-up sequence, so the power path and part of the board are working.

What a dark internal screen alone would suggest: the display, its cable or its backlight. Any of those would leave the machine running invisibly.

Why no output on an external display changes that: it points further back. A machine that produces nothing on either display has a problem before the display — in the graphics path or in the start-up itself.
