Indicators Flashing in Step Are Reporting a Condition, Not Reporting Activity

His enquiry describes a pattern rather than a symptom, and patterns are readable. A drive at least a decade old that stopped being recognised, tried on three machines with two leads, where "power is going in, as it has four lights on the rear which flash continually together, but no link is established." Lights that move independently show work; lights that move as one are a signal — and this enclosure is reporting that it cannot find a usable drive.

The decode: how to read a light pattern, and what this one says

What indicators normally do on a multi-light enclosure: report separate things. Power, activity, connection and status are shown independently, so in ordinary use they are out of step with one another.

Why unison is therefore meaningful: it overrides that. A controller flashing every indicator together has taken them over to signal a condition, which is a deliberate design and not a coincidence.

What that condition almost always is: no usable drive. The controller powered up, looked for a drive to manage, and could not identify one.

Why that is a statement about the drive rather than the enclosure: the controller is running. Something has to be working in order to flash anything in a pattern.

Why no host connection follows from it: the enclosure has nothing to present. An interface with no drive behind it does not offer storage to a computer, so the machines see nothing.

Why his testing was thorough and yet could not resolve it: he eliminated the outside. Three hosts and two leads exclude everything except the enclosure and the drive within it, and the light pattern then distinguishes those two.

Why the age matters to what is likely: a decade is a long service life. Bearings, board components and the recording surface all age, and any of them can end in a drive that no longer identifies itself.

What is established next and how: the drive comes out. Addressed directly on controlled equipment, it can be asked for its identity without the enclosure in the way.

Why that step is also where a hopeful outcome could appear: enclosure controllers are less tolerant than dedicated equipment. A drive that answers slowly may be rejected by an enclosure and accepted by a reader that waits.

What must not happen meanwhile: no further power cycling in the hope of a different pattern. The signal is consistent, and repeating it costs start-ups on an ageing drive.
