The decode: what changes when footage may be relied upon
Why the technical work is largely the same: the storage is read and the recordings extracted. A recorder's internal medium is imaged and its proprietary structures interpreted, exactly as with any other device.
What is added rather than changed: a record of everything done. Who held the unit, when, what was performed and what the content was verified as — documentation running alongside the work rather than assembled afterwards.
Why that has to start at receipt: provenance cannot be reconstructed retrospectively. A chain of custody begun after the work is a description rather than a record, and its value depends entirely on being continuous.
Why write-blocked imaging matters more here than usual: it is demonstrable. Capturing through equipment that cannot write establishes that the original was not altered, which is a statement that can be supported rather than asserted.
What verification values contribute: a check anyone can repeat. Recording a value computed from the image at capture allows any later party to confirm the copy is unchanged, without trusting the laboratory.
Why timestamps deserve particular attention on a vehicle unit: the time of the incident is the point. The device's own clock must be recorded as it stands and any offset noted rather than corrected, because an adjusted timestamp is a modified record.
Why the impact makes the first power-up decisive: the unit was damaged in the event. Storage that survived a collision may be marginal, and a unit powered casually to see whether it works spends the attempt on curiosity.
What is done instead: the storage comes out and is read independently. The recorder itself is not required and is not used, which removes any risk of the device overwriting during a start-up sequence.
Why that risk is real on continuous recorders: they record in a loop. A unit that starts and resumes recording writes over the oldest material, which after an incident may be precisely the period wanted.
