The decode: what the dark indicator excludes, and why the missing casing matters
What the indicator on a stick reports: that its controller is running. The light is driven by the controller once it has power and has begun operating.
What its complete absence therefore means: the controller never started. No light at all places the fault before the controller rather than in anything it does.
Why that is a narrow and useful conclusion: it excludes most faults. Filesystem damage, wear and controller confusion all produce a device that lights up and misbehaves.
