Most of a Memory Card Is Packaging, and the Part That Matters Is Very Small

His enquiry has stakes beyond the sentimental and a fault that sounds worse than it usually is. A card holding footage of a road accident, where "the card has a crack that appeared when I tried taking it out of the camera." Whether that crack matters depends entirely on where it runs — because the component holding the recording occupies a small fraction of the card, and most of what broke is plastic.

The decode: what is actually inside a card, and what a break does to it

What a memory card physically contains: less than its size suggests. Inside the plastic body sits a small circuit board carrying a memory package and a controller, occupying a fraction of the card's area.

Why that geometry is the whole question: a break either crosses the package or it does not. A fracture through packaging alone leaves the recording physically untouched.

Why the location of a break during removal is usually favourable: the stress is at the edges. Cards snap where they are gripped and levered, which is typically away from the components.

What happens when the board is broken but the package is not: the package is read directly. The memory is removed from the damaged board and addressed on fixed contact equipment, bypassing the card's own circuitry entirely.

Why that requires reconstruction afterwards: the controller is gone. A card's controller arranges data across the memory in its own scheme, and reading the memory directly returns that raw arrangement, which is undone in software.

What genuinely limits recovery: a break crossing the die. Where the fracture passes through the memory package itself, the affected region is unrecoverable by any means.

Why video survives partial loss reasonably well: it is written continuously. Footage is recorded as a stream, so a lost region costs an interval rather than the whole file.

Why the recording style helps further: vehicle recorders write in segments. Continuous recording is stored as a sequence of separate clips, so surviving segments recover independently of damaged ones.

Why the card must not be inserted anywhere: a fractured card in a reader can short. Broken conductors touching one another under power can destroy a package that the break itself spared.

What is worth doing at once given what the footage is for: tell whoever needs it that it exists and is being recovered. Insurers and investigators can hold a position open, and a delay is easier to accommodate than a surprise.
