A stick owned for many years where the light comes on and the connection sound plays, but the computer says "please insert a disk into removable disk", and properties report "used space and free space is 0 bytes." The computer is treating the stick as an empty card reader, which happens when a controller enumerates and then cannot reach its own memory.

The decode: why the computer thinks a disk is missing
How a flash drive presents itself: as a drive with removable media. The device announces that it is a storage device, then reports how much capacity that storage has — two separate statements.
Why the first succeeded: the controller is running. Power reached it, it answered the identity request, and the system accepted it as a device — which is what the light and the connection sound reflect.
Why the second failed: it reported nothing. A device that announces itself and then declares zero capacity is telling the host there is no medium to read, and the host reports exactly that.
Why the wording is so specific: the message is designed for card readers. An empty reader enumerates as a drive and reports no media, and the computer cannot distinguish that from a stick whose controller cannot reach its memory.
Why the zero-byte properties confirm it: both figures come from the same report. Used and free are calculated from a capacity of zero, so both read zero, which is consistency rather than corruption.
