A Recovery Environment Runs Without the Storage, So Reaching It Proves Nothing About the Drive

Her enquiry contains an observation that is more decisive than it appears. A laptop that crashed, where a recovery environment was reached successfully and its disk utility shows "no drive, only base drive" — from which she was told the start-up disc is unavailable and it is a hardware matter. Getting into that environment is not evidence the machine is healthy, and what it shows once there is a clean and useful elimination.
