Beeping Is the Spindle Being Energised and Failing to Rotate

The decode: what the sound is, and what to do about a deadline
Where a beep comes from: the spindle motor. A motor being driven and failing to turn produces a tone rather than a movement, as the drive circuitry pulses it and the coil resonates instead of rotating.
Why that differs from clicking: clicking is the head assembly. Impulse sounds mean the heads are moving and failing to find their track; a beep means nothing is moving at all, which is a different fault entirely.
What stops platters turning: two things principally. Heads resting on the surface and bonding to it, or a spindle bearing that has seized — both mechanical and both requiring the drive to be opened.
Why the files stopped playing first: the drive was already failing while connected. Rotation faltering mid-session ends reading immediately, which is why playback stopped before anything else was noticed.
Why the eject option was unavailable: the system had pending operations it could not complete. Ejection requires outstanding writes to be flushed, and a drive that has stopped responding cannot accept them, so the option is withheld.
