Whether a Device Presents Itself and Whether It Holds Content Are Unrelated

His enquiry asks the underlying question directly, which most do not. A card that will not load or be detected, with no physical damage and several methods already tried, and then plainly: "can you let me know if the data on the card is recoverable, despite it not loading?" The two things are far less connected than they feel — a device that cannot introduce itself to a computer has said nothing whatever about what is stored inside it.

The decode: why the two questions come apart, and what that means here

What has to happen before a computer shows a device: a conversation. The card must respond to an enquiry, identify itself, state its capacity and accept commands, all before any content is involved.

Which part of the card does that: the controller. A small processor manages the exchange, and it is entirely separate from the memory holding the files.

What follows when the conversation fails: the controller stopped, not the memory. A card that will not enumerate has a controller that cannot start or contacts that cannot connect.

Why the memory is normally untouched by that: it is passive. Storage cells hold charge whether or not anything is asking them questions.

Why the answer to his question is therefore usually yes: the content is behind the fault. In most non-enumerating cards, everything is present and only the route to it has failed.

How it is reached without the controller: directly. The memory is addressed on fixed contact equipment past the controller entirely, and the arrangement reconstructed in software.

Why that is possible at all: the data is still ordered. The controller's mapping scheme can be derived from the raw content rather than obtained from the controller.

What his absence of physical damage contributes: it raises the expectation. A card with no visible harm is more likely to have a controller fault than a damaged package.

Why his several attempts are worth mentioning: they should now stop. Where a controller is struggling, each power-up risks corrupting the mapping a reconstruction would use.

What the honest limit is: the memory itself may have failed. Where the package is damaged or its cells have degraded, no route reaches content that is no longer held — which is established by reading rather than assumed.
