The Connection Sound Confirms the Interface, Not the Drive Behind It

The decode: what the sound proves, and what it leaves open
What produces the connection sound: the interface, not the storage. An external drive contains a bridge board that presents itself to the computer, and the chime plays when that board announces itself.
Why that happens before anything is known about the drive: the bridge speaks first. It identifies itself as a device and only afterwards reports what storage it has found.
What follows from hearing the chime and seeing nothing: a clean division. The cable, the port, the host and the bridge all work — and the drive behind the bridge is not answering.
Why that is more useful than it sounds: it eliminates the cheap explanations. Nothing is wrong with the lead or the socket, so replacing them will change nothing.
