Nobody repairs a USB stick. They recover it, once.

The parts cost less than the labour, and on most modern designs there is nothing separable to work on. What matters is getting the data off — and how that is done depends on something you cannot see from the outside.

A repair utility is trying to produce a working stick, and the quickest route to that is frequently to erase it. A recovery is trying to produce your files. The two aims collide at exactly the wrong moment.

×If Windows offers to format the stick, decline. That prompt normally means the file-system header is damaged, not that the data has gone. Formatting is the fastest way to turn a straightforward recovery into a difficult one — and on a stick that is physically failing it may be the last thing it ever does.

A USB stick costs less than ten minutes of an engineer's time, so nobody repairs one and hands it back working. Anyone offering to is not describing a service worth buying.

What you are actually purchasing is a single read — the data lifted off once, delivered on something else, and the original returned or destroyed as you prefer. The stick is a write-off from the moment it failed. The only question is whether what was on it can be reached.

That reframing matters because it sets expectations correctly. Success means your files, not a working stick.

Discrete construction. Separate controller and memory chips on a small board. Where the controller has failed, the memory can be removed and read on a programmer. Well-understood work.

Monolithic construction. Controller and flash moulded into a single die with nothing separable. Reading these means locating test points on the die and connecting by hand under magnification.

You cannot tell from the model. Construction varies between production runs of the same product name. We open and identify it free of charge before quoting.

Physical damage is usually survivable. Snapped connectors and washing-machine incidents recover more often than people expect. Do not power it up to test.
