Hitachi bought IBM’s hard drive business in 2003, renamed itself HGST, and was acquired by Western Digital in 2012. Which era a drive comes from determines almost everything about how it is handled.

Old, and generally better built than most.

Hitachi drives, and the HGST range that followed after Western Digital acquired the business, have a deserved reputation for durability. What reaches this bench reflects that: these are usually not drives that failed young. They are drives that ran for a decade and then wore out.

The failure profile is correspondingly different. Motor and bearing wear appears more often than head crashes, and the drives frequently arrive from equipment nobody thought about for years — laboratory instruments, industrial controllers, old NAS units still running because nothing prompted a replacement.

Donor sourcing is the constraint rather than the technique. Deskstar and Travelstar families are no longer manufactured, and matching firmware revision on a fifteen-year-old drive takes time.

Fifteen-year-old drives need fifteen-year-old donors.

A Hitachi recovery is rarely difficult in technique. It is frequently slow in logistics, because a matching donor has to be found for a family that stopped being made years ago and matched on firmware revision as well as head configuration.

We hold a deliberate reserve of older families precisely because this region's laboratory and industrial equipment keeps producing them. Where a particular revision has to be sourced, you are told the likely timescale at the diagnostic rather than discovering it later.

Usually yes. Age affects donor availability rather than recoverability, and these drives are generally well built. The data on them is often irreplaceable precisely because it is old.
