The Buffalo is usually the least of the problem.

Underneath the interface a LinkStation or TeraStation is a small Linux computer running conventional software RAID and standard file systems — which means once the disks are imaged, the appliance stops mattering entirely.

Underneath the branding these are standard mdadm arrays carrying XFS or ext, which is thoroughly documented territory once the disks are imaged. The awkward part is the appliance’s own repair tooling, not the format it writes.

×Do not run a firmware update or a Buffalo “recovery” utility on a unit whose array is degraded. Several of these tools reinitialise the array as part of restoring the appliance, which returns a working NAS and an empty one. If the data matters, take the disks out instead.

XFS on mdadm, behind a locked door.

Buffalo LinkStation and TeraStation units are ordinary Linux storage underneath — mdadm software RAID with XFS on top on most models. That is good news, because it means the disks can be read on other hardware and the array reassembled without the original unit.

What makes Buffalo distinctive is how aggressively the firmware locks its disks. Pull a drive out of a LinkStation and connect it to a PC and you will typically get nothing usable, because Buffalo's partitioning and its EM mode behaviour are more restrictive than Synology's or QNAP's.

The practical consequence: send the whole unit rather than just the disks, and do not attempt the firmware recovery mode the manual suggests.

The ranges that reach this bench.

The recovery mode that is not one.

A failing LinkStation frequently drops into what Buffalo calls emergency mode, and the documented response is to run the firmware updater against it. On a unit whose disks have a problem, that updater can reinitialise the array configuration — which is the opposite of what you want.

If your unit is in EM mode and the data matters, stop there. Power it down and send it. The firmware recovery procedure is designed to restore a working appliance, not to preserve what is on the disks.

Rarely usefully. Buffalo's partitioning is more restrictive than most and the disks generally will not mount as ordinary volumes. Send the unit.
