A Forced Reset Is a Power Cut, and a Drive Already Struggling May Not Survive One

His account puts two events in order and invites the obvious question. A laptop that froze one night, so "I attempted a hard reset, upon which I noticed I was getting a repeated sound from the drive" — and the machine now stops at a message saying it needs repair. Whether the reset caused the sound or revealed it cannot be settled from outside, and the more useful point is that the freeze itself was probably already the drive.

The decode: what came first, and why the answer matters less than it feels

Why the freeze is the first thing to reconsider: machines rarely hang alone. A whole-system freeze is very often the operating system waiting on storage that has stopped answering.

What that suggests about the order: the drive was already failing. The freeze would then be the first symptom rather than an unrelated event that preceded one.

What a forced reset does, stated plainly: it removes power. Holding the power control cuts supply without any ordered stop, so a drive is halted wherever it happens to be.
