Everything Old Missing and Everything Recent Present Describes a Blanking Followed by Reuse

Her enquiry describes a distribution rather than a fault, and the distribution says what happened. A card that lives in her camera, where "all my old photos from the last few years' holidays have erased and I only have thirty photos on there which I've taken over the last week" — and she is unsure whether they were deleted. That shape is characteristic: content vanishing by age rather than at random is what a card looks like after it has been blanked and used again.

The decode: why the pattern is diagnostic, and where the old photographs are

Why loss by age is different from loss at random: selective deletion is not age-ordered. Files removed individually go in whatever order someone chose, not in a clean block by date.

What produces an age-ordered result instead: a single operation affecting everything. A format or an in-camera erase removes the references to all content at once.

Why recent photographs survive that: they were written afterwards. Anything recorded after the blanking is properly referenced and appears normally.

Why her thirty images are the evidence rather than the exception: they date the event. The oldest of them was taken shortly after whatever removed the rest.

Where the older photographs are now: still on the card, unreferenced. Removing references does not remove content, so several years of images physically remain.

Why she may genuinely not know what happened: cameras offer both. Formatting and erasing are menu options that can be selected in a moment, and a card left permanently in a camera is exposed to both.

What is worth doing before anything else: checking what was copied off. Several years of holidays may partly exist on a computer or in an account.
