The client had already eliminated the easy explanations properly, testing across three computers and two cables. That work is genuinely useful and it narrows the fault considerably.
The four rear lights flashing continuously together told us power was reaching the unit and something was cycling — a repeated attempt to initialise that was not completing. A completely dead unit shows no lights; this one was trying.
Assessment identified faults in both the circuit board and the drive firmware. That combination is common on drives of this age: board components degrade over years of service, and the resulting marginal operation leaves the drive's service area inconsistent.
Neither fault was mechanical. The platters and heads were sound throughout.
The data was copied off following board replacement and firmware correction.
A ten-year-old external drive that has been in regular service is well within the range where board-level failure becomes likely. The electronics wear out before the mechanics do more often than people expect.
Ruling out the host and the cabling costs nothing and genuinely narrows the fault. It is the right first step and the client did it correctly.
A unit cycling repeatedly is attempting to initialise and failing. That is a different and more hopeful symptom than no response at all.
Board and bridge failures on older external drives are common, and the disk behind them is frequently in good condition.
