Four lights flashing, and no connection at all.

A Samsung D3 Station external drive of around ten years old, suddenly unrecognised across three different computers and two cables. Power was reaching the unit — four rear lights flashed continuously — but no link was established.

The client had already eliminated the easy explanations properly, testing across three computers and two cables. That work is genuinely useful and it narrows the fault considerably.

The four rear lights flashing continuously together told us power was reaching the unit and something was cycling — a repeated attempt to initialise that was not completing. A completely dead unit shows no lights; this one was trying.

What had actually failed.

Assessment identified faults in both the circuit board and the drive firmware. That combination is common on drives of this age: board components degrade over years of service, and the resulting marginal operation leaves the drive's service area inconsistent.

Neither fault was mechanical. The platters and heads were sound throughout.
