Three Facts Are Usually Sufficient: What It Was Doing, What Changed, and What It Does Now
His enquiry apologises for itself twice and does not need to. A drive that "spontaneously stopped working whilst I was using it months ago," made an unfamiliar sound, and afterwards reported an unrecognised volume — followed by "there's probably a lot more detail that I'm omitting, but please go easy on me, I'm a student." He has supplied the three things that actually determine the approach, and the ones he thinks he is missing mostly do not exist.

The decode: which details matter, and why the rest are not needed
What his first fact establishes: it failed while working. A drive that stopped during use was spinning and being read at the moment of failure, which points at the mechanism rather than at a start-up problem.
What the second establishes: a change was audible. An unfamiliar sound at the moment of failure means something mechanical altered, which excludes a purely logical fault.
What the third establishes: the drive cannot describe itself. An unrecognised volume after a mechanical event usually means the drive cannot read the region holding its own parameters.
Why those three together are enough to plan the work: they determine the route. The drive is addressed on controlled equipment, its draw measured, and its surfaces inspected under filtered air before anything rotates.
