An Absence Can Rule Things Out and Can Never Establish Anything on Its Own

The decode: five things this case establishes, at a milestone
The first — the absence of prior symptoms is real evidence and establishes almost nothing positive. It is natural to read no signs of failure as meaning the drive was healthy until the moment it stopped, and that is not what it means. It means the failure modes that announce themselves did not occur — progressive surface degradation, gradual slowing, files becoming difficult to open. Those give warning. Electronic faults, firmware faults and a head failing outright give none at all. So the absence does not describe the drive's condition beforehand; it narrows which kind of failure this is.
The second — narrowing is what an absence is for, and it is genuinely useful. Having excluded the modes that announce themselves, what remains is the sudden ones, and sudden faults behave differently from progressive ones: they are far more often intermittent than they are permanent. That is a prediction rather than a hope, and this case confirmed it within a day.
The third — the drive appearing on Tuesday was not an improvement. A drive undetectable one day and spinning the next has not partly recovered. It is the same fault presenting differently, which is what intermittency means, and the temptation is to read the change as progress and press on. That window was the moment to capture everything and nothing else. It is the most valuable thing the case contained and it was spent on an initialisation prompt.
The fourth — the offer to initialise is the trap, and it is offered precisely when it is most dangerous. A system presents it when it can reach a device and cannot interpret a volume on it, which is exactly the state a recoverable drive is in. Accepting writes a fresh signature and partition table over the structures that identify where the volume began, and on a drive that is presenting intermittently, it does so at the worst possible moment.
The fifth, and the one that gives the case its shape — the second absence is worth far more than the first. The error returned was that the specified device did not exist. That is also an absence, and unlike the first it is precise: the drive stopped responding partway through the operation, and the system is reporting that the thing it was writing to was no longer there. It establishes the intermittency, it establishes when the drop occurred, and it establishes something better still — that the initialisation did not complete. The structures may be damaged rather than replaced.
